How to Make a CV ATS-Friendly

An ATS-friendly CV is designed so applicant tracking systems and recruiters can read your information in a clear, predictable order. The goal is not to “beat” an ATS. It is to present your real experience, skills and qualifications in a format that is easy to parse and compare with the job you are applying for.

1. Use a simple reading order

A single-column layout is usually the safest starting point. Keep your name and contact information near the top, followed by clearly labeled sections such as Professional Summary, Work Experience, Education, Skills and Certifications. Decorative sidebars, floating text boxes and complex visual layouts can make the reading order less predictable.

2. Use standard section headings

Recruiters and resume parsers recognize familiar headings more reliably than creative labels. “Work Experience” is clearer than “My Journey,” and “Skills” is clearer than “What I Bring.” You can still write naturally inside each section without making the structure unusual.

3. Match the job description truthfully

Read the vacancy carefully and identify the responsibilities, tools, skills and experience it actually requires. If those terms accurately describe your background, use the same clear language in your CV. Do not add qualifications, software or experience you do not have simply to increase keyword coverage.

4. Make your work experience easy to scan

For each role, include the job title, employer, location when useful, and dates. Use concise bullet points to explain your responsibilities and achievements. Where accurate, include measurable outcomes such as revenue generated, costs reduced, response times improved, projects completed, customers supported or processes automated.

5. Keep dates and formatting consistent

Use one date style throughout the document, for example “Jan 2024 – Aug 2026” or “2024 – 2026.” Keep job titles, company names and bullet styles consistent as well. Consistency helps both automated parsing and human reviewers.

6. Avoid hiding essential information

Do not place your only phone number, email address, key skills or job history inside graphics, images or decorative elements. Avoid using icons as the only label for contact information. Important content should exist as normal selectable text.

7. Use a readable file format

DOCX is widely readable by recruitment systems, while a properly generated text-based PDF can also work well. A scanned-image PDF is much less reliable because the text may not be directly extractable. Read our PDF vs DOCX for ATS guide for a practical comparison.

8. Check keywords without keyword stuffing

A strong CV uses relevant terminology naturally. Repeating the same keyword many times does not make weak experience stronger. Use our ATS keywords guide to understand how to compare your CV with a job description responsibly.

9. Choose a clean template

LebJobs provides ATS-safe CV templates that avoid tables, text boxes, sidebars and floating elements for essential information. You can download them from Career Services and adapt the content to your actual background.

10. Test the final CV

Use the LebJobs ATS Resume Checker to review structure, parsing readiness and job-description alignment. Treat the result as guidance, not as a universal score used by every employer. Different recruitment systems process resumes differently.
